Snow Plowing Update Pt. II 2/3/11
The Department of Streets and Sanitation crews in the 30th Ward are currently working on the vital and side streets. Their work will continue throughout the afternoon and evening. Due to the depth of the snow and ice, our streets will require several treatments. The City has deployed all 274 snow plows and an additional 100 pieces of heavy equipment to get our vital and side streets clean.
Please note, if anyone is parked next to a school, we are requesting that you move your car to allow crews to clear the curbs in preparation for school tomorrow.
We understand that some residents are concerned about snow removal from alleys. As policy, the City does not plow alleys because plowing alleys causes snow to be pressed up against garages and parking lot entrances making it even harder for residents to get out. At this time, we recommend that residents work with their neighbors to clear alleys.
We also encourage residents and businesses to take a few moments to clear snow from sidewalk crosswalks to ensure that everyone can safely cross streets and avoid walking in the road.
I will be sure to send out further notifications as more information becomes available.
As I said earlier, thank you for your ongoing patience as our Streets and Sanitation crews continue to clear the snow after this historic storm.
I assure you that we are doing everything we can to get the streets cleaned as soon as possible.

Snow Plowing Update Pt. I 2/3/11
The Department of Streets and Sanitation is currently working on clearing all of the vital streets in our neighborhoods. Vital streets include streets around schools, senior centers, medical centers, and firehouses. Some crews have also moved to side streets. Please note that work on side streets will continue throughout the day.
Currently, Streets and Sanitation does not have a scheduled time to begin garbage and recycling pick-up. Please be advised that all crews are currently assigned to snow clearing.
I will be sure to send out further notifications as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your ongoing patience as Streets and Sanitation crews continue to clear the snow after this historic storm. Thank you also to everyone who has pitched in and helped clear sidewalks, dig out cars, and clear alleys. Your willingness to help your neighbors is one of the things that make our community such a great place.
Just a few key points to continue working through this storm:
· Reach out to friends, relatives and neighbors to make sure they are safe and comfortable. If you are concerned about someone and not able to make contact yourself, call 311 and request a well-being check.
· Please continue to keep cars off of arterial streets on the snow route system. This is a matter of public safety and allows us to clear streets more quickly. The 2 inch winter parking ban on marked routes will be in effect once we have 2 inches on the ground.
· When clearing snow from cars, pile it on the parkway. Never shovel snow into the street.
· Clear snow from around garbage carts to assist with garbage removal.
· Do not cover fire hydrants with shoveled snow
· Allow extra time if traveling on public transportation.
